Summary

Meredith Fox has been going to Martha's Vineyard for the summer as long as she can remember。 But this summer is the first one back since the death of Meredith's sister。 It will all be overwhelming, but even more since since the entire extended family will be together for her cousin's big wedding。

Unfortunately, Meredith's longtime boyfriend unexpectedly dumped her two weeks before the wedding, leaving her dateless。 Luckily, she has the perfect distraction。 Her family has a tradition of playing the ultimate game of Assassin every summer, and this year it will take place during the week of wedding festivities。

But her target just happens to be a very cute groomsman。 She's determined to not let herself get distracted, not let herself be lost in another doomed relationship。 But as the week progresses, she can't help falling for him, which may cost her not only the game, but also her heart。

Perfect for fans of Jenny Han and Katie Cotugno, this is a story of loss, romance, and the time it takes to become who you really want to be。

Actual Rating: 3。5 Meredith has been going to Martha’s Vineyard for the summer for as long as she can remember。 This summer is the first time she’s going back since the death of her sister。 She is spending a week celebrating her cousin’s wedding, and right before she leaves her long term boyfriend dumps her。 This one was super cute summer YA! I love reading books that contain a huge tight family。 Getting to know Meredith and her cousins was a delight! If you love reading about families with long-standing traditions, this one is for you! What originally gravitated me to this book was the mention of a game called “assassin”。 It was a super fun water gun game that helped reconnect Meredith’s family after mourning a loss。I ended up rating this one 3。5。 One of the main focuses of this book is the romance, and I really didn’t care for Meredith and Wit。 I did enjoy them together but I just didn’t enjoy how they were written。 The instalove confused me as Meredith was recently single after a four year relationship and Wit was described as a player。 Overall, this was a cute summer read that I did enjoy! 。。。more

Typical sissy YA book。 The relationship between Wit and Meredith is cute for the first 10 pages, but it’s disgustingly sappy for the next 300。 The author tried too hard to make this book relatable。 Would not recommend。

Cute summer read, but nothing more than that。

This was a quick, cute read。 I would’ve loved it when I was 15。 To be fair, it was a rec from Taylor Swift stan twitter。

I really loved this book! The setting had me wishing I could hop a plane to Martha’s Vineyard。 And the subplot of the Assasins game? So fun。 I was rooting for Mer and Wit the whole time, their story was really sweet。 There was one plot point about a conflict between Mer and a friend that was introduced almost immediately at the beginning and it really angered me。 I was afraid it was going to make me like the book less, but thankfully it was resolved by the end!

I truly loved this book。 I couldn’t stop reading it so I finished it in two days。 What grabbed my attention was the mention of the game assassin being played during the plot of the book, I really enjoyed that aspect since I was able to relate to playing that game。 I also really loved how the two main characters connected, can I have that??? Lol。 I highly recommend this book。 It was the perfect summer read!

ur average summer romance。 it talked a lot abt her sisters death but the romance was cute, not the most well written but it makes martha’s vineyard sound like the coziest place ever, there was some steamy scenes and i’m not rly crazy for this book but it was okay!

This just wasn't for me。 I also felt like there was a bit of tick the box diversity going on and the whole insta love just。。。 I couldn't really get into it。 I can why the book is appealing to others though and I do like how it dealt with grief and I loved the setting。 This just wasn't for me。 I also felt like there was a bit of tick the box diversity going on and the whole insta love just。。。 I couldn't really get into it。 I can why the book is appealing to others though and I do like how it dealt with grief and I loved the setting。 。。。more

I was so invested in the Assassins game! There were a lot of characters -family and friends of the main characters- but they were pretty easy to keep track of (especially with the family tree included in the beginning)。 Even with there being so many characters, they all were well developed and three dimensional。 Honestly, maybe they were too well developed and interesting, because by the end I really didn't care much about the main characters' relationship- I just wanted to read about the other characters (I truly think I was more invested in Meredith's aunts' baby than in Meredith's relationship lol)。This novel also met exactly what I've been looking for in that it was a bit more mature than a YA novel but wasn't quite a New Adult。 As a college student in her early 20s, I struggle to find books with characters my age。 Most YA characters are in high school but most New Adult characters are in their late 20s/early 30s, out of college and working full time jobs。 The main characters in The Summer of Broken Rules are 18 and 19 (both in college)。Now for a couple things I didn't like: The main character, Meredith, mentioned her ex a lot。 It added to her backstory and development but it still felt like she was bringing him up too often, both to the characters in the book and just to us readers。(not really a spoiler but going to talk about something we learn in the first few chapters) I also found it strange that Sarah didn't ask Meredith to be a bridesmaid or at least to be involved in the wedding somehow。 Sarah and Claire were best friends and Sarah obviously would've asked Claire to be a bridesmaid, so I felt like, in Claire's memory, she would've asked Meredith instead。 It was a small detail, but I still found it strange that Meredith (or her parents) apparently wasn't asked to be involved in the wedding in any way。(view spoiler)[ The other main part I disliked was went Wit got upset with Meredith for not telling him that he was her Assassins target。 The game was all about lying and deception, so to me, it seemed like he was overly upset。 Then, he almost immediately was fine again。 It just felt like unnecessary drama。 Mer was already upset with him about something else, so I don't think him being upset with her added anything。 (hide spoiler)]Overall, I really enjoyed this book! I don't normally say this, but I would love to read a sequel! There were so many characters and plot line that could be expanded on, and I would be super interested to read more about them。 。。。more

This book was very cute。 I was reading another book and it was super slow (now abandoned), and then I picked this up and couldn't put it down。 Only aspect I wanted to see more of was maybe her friendships with like Luli and etc。 This book was very cute。 I was reading another book and it was super slow (now abandoned), and then I picked this up and couldn't put it down。 Only aspect I wanted to see more of was maybe her friendships with like Luli and etc。 。。。more

The definition of a perfect beach read! Fun plot with a twinge of sadness, super endearing characters, and a swoony romance for the season。 The epilogue at the end seriously had me tearing up。 ❤️

Read this in a day and loved it。 Perfectly adorable summer book。

I liked the plot and premise a lot, my only issue was that her love interest was her cousin's fiance's stepbrother。 Although they aren't related by blood, but rather just by marriage a couple times, I think it would have been better if they were just not related at all, and one or both of them were just good friends of the wedding couple。 I liked the plot and premise a lot, my only issue was that her love interest was her cousin's fiance's stepbrother。 Although they aren't related by blood, but rather just by marriage a couple times, I think it would have been better if they were just not related at all, and one or both of them were just good friends of the wedding couple。 。。。more

this was seriously so, so cute。 like so cute and sad and funny— and let me tell you, it takes a lot from a book to make me laugh out loud and physically grin from ear to ear。 a lot。 i feel like this book deserves tik tok hype and bestselling awards or something i don’t know how that hasn’t happened when it was one of the most happy surprises of this year for me。 by the way, incase the author is scrolling through her ratings— you did amazing, firstly。 and second, your aunt was so kind— i went on this was seriously so, so cute。 like so cute and sad and funny— and let me tell you, it takes a lot from a book to make me laugh out loud and physically grin from ear to ear。 a lot。 i feel like this book deserves tik tok hype and bestselling awards or something i don’t know how that hasn’t happened when it was one of the most happy surprises of this year for me。 by the way, incase the author is scrolling through her ratings— you did amazing, firstly。 and second, your aunt was so kind— i went on a bookstore tour for my birthday and stumbled upon the store she works at, and when she saw me holding your work she immediately started gushing about how i had to buy it because it was amazing and how her niece had written it。 she’s really good at recommending books 。。。more
